That information is fractured. They have to be short and to the point, and in the process, they leave out all of the context that you need to fully understand. This course is designed to fill those gaps. A strong set of fundamentals is the starting point to taking your art exactly where you want it.
There's two main reasons I chose to make a digital portraiture course. First is that portraiture is the key to unlocking how to draw everything else. Every face is different, so you must have a great understanding of form and proportion. Being off by only a few millimeters can kill the likeness. Additionally, there's many different materials on a face, such as glossy eyeballs, smooth skin, hairy... hair. You have to master a variety of edge types and textures. All of these factors make drawing anything else after a portrait seem much simpler in comparison, and I teach in a versatile way that applies to every subject, not just portraits.
Second is that digital mediums are accessible and easy to handle. Working with digital means you get infinite do-overs as long as you have a drawing tablet. Even the software is free, Krita is just as good as any professional program. There's infinite paint, there's no clean up, and you can undo any mistakes. As a learning environment, digital allows you to focus mostly on the knowledge you're gaining and how to apply it, without the friction of learning how to clean brushes or whittle down a pencil with a knife. Although if those mediums are more comfortable for you I wholly recommend using them. This information applies to all mediums, that's the power of fundamentals.
I'm so happy with this course. I've been studying drawing intensely since January and have gone through several courses, from fundamentals to advanced, and yours has so much valuable information that I hadn't seen anywhere else. My mind is already blown, and I'm only on Lesson 7! It has already changed the way I think about drawing. I really loved the measuring techniques, the explanations of Photoshop functions I wasn't aware of, and the way you turned a block-in into a perfectly rendered image in less than an hour. The way you gradually got rid of the construction lines was something I'd always wanted to know how to do.Danusko · course student
Catrpillrs' feedback is very thought out and intentional. I had noted in a meeting how I felt that I seemed to be guessing until I got lucky when painting. Catrpillrs had come to a similar conclusion before I had brought it up and already had homework planned with that in mind.Aaron · one-on-one student
Catrpillrs is a great instructor, the lessons and critiques she provides are very insightful and are well explained. She clearly tackles the fundamental skills, starting with the most important things to learn, providing a strong foundation to build off of. She also gives great resources to further look into the subjects that you find interesting. I often return to the recordings while drawing to help guide me.G. · one-on-one student
